Who are The Writing Irregulars?

The Writing Irregulars are three writing professors at Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, Virginia. We attempt to address the common challenges of academic writing and make the craft of writing less painful for our students. In our podcast, available on iTunesU, we rant and rave about common problems seen in college essays in hopes that our wisdom, or at least our tips, will help students write better papers. Our podcast is aimed at high school and college level writers who must produce academic writing in any discipline.

Justin Pilla

Justin Pilla was born in Queens New York but has spent most of his life in Virginia. He graduated from George Mason University with a BA in English and received his Master's in English from the College of Charleston. For fun, Justin enjoys reading the great works of literature, history and philosophy. He's also a huge fan of college sports and texas hold-em. One day he hopes to become a real boy, and yes, he does enjoy drinking pina coladas and dancing in the rain.

Julie Allen

Julie is originally from Ohio, which explains her down-to-earth nature and her use of words like "pop" instead of "soda". She graduated from Ohio University in 1990 with a degree in Broadcast Television and Video Production, but after years of messing around with cameras, live news and special events, she decided she'd rather be an English teacher. Julie received her Master of Arts in Literature and Language from Marymount University in 2004 and now teaches NVCC's freshman level English composition classes and Creative Writing in Drama.  In between grading batches of papers Julie enjoys photography, cooking, knitting and the occasional martini.

Will Schutz

Born and bred in California, I'm currently an English instructor at Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale. It's a long story about how I ended up here on the East Coast, so I'll spare you the details. What I really want to say is that I truly love teaching and hope that our podcast recordings from "The Writing Irregulars" are helpful in not only improving your writing, but also in increasing your enjoyment of writing. Have a listen, and happy writing to you!
